TIP:  It is much easier to clean up the Pyrex Glass measuring cup if you wipe the cup with a paper towel while the cup is still warm. Our lip balm recipe making e-book covers many more complex recipes such as home made Tiger Balm.

Basic Lip Gloss Recipe

You will need 10 Gloss Rollers, 2 ounces of oil of choice, plastic pipettes (to transfer your formulas when warm into the gloss rollers) and flavor(s) of choice.  Castor oil is the thickest of all carrier oils, and stays on the longest, so for that reason we choose castor oil for our lip gloss base.  You can thicken other oils up with a tad of beeswax in the microwave.  Other oils can include sweet almond, or primrose oil, we find great for addressing PMS. Other additives can include a little vitamin e oil, or straight vitamin e oil, which is a natural preservative, and an oil based sweetener which is optional.  Sweetener must be oil based--and is offered on our flavor menu.  Sweetener does tend to cause lip licking and the lips to dry out.  To Make:  Heat oil just a bit in the microwave, (usually a few minutes) using a glass Pyrex measuring cup, and when warm--stir in any additives you like, such as the vitamin e oil and flavor oil, before transferring into gloss rollers.  For tint you can swirl just a tad of old lip stick in the warm formula until the color is even.  We use a tooth pick to swirl color in.  You can also add skin safe mica's in, such as gold-check the cheap end cosmetic section of your local store for glitter type products.

Basic Lip Balm Recipe

Making lip balm is basically as simple as heating oil and wax together.  The best oil is Safflower which is high in vitamin e and right on your grocery store shelf.  In the summer months you want want a harder formula.  For general year round use the following recipe:  8 parts edible food oil to 2 parts wax such as beeswax, or Candelilla wax if you are a vegan.  Summer months you would want to up the wax by 10% and reduce your oil part by 10%.  You can also use regular food based shortening, usually made with soybean oil, and which is where soy wax comes from.  The "soybean" method you could melt 8 parts vegetable shortening to 2 parts beeswax or candellia wax and still have a really good base.  Still an oil based product, you then add your oil based flavor and/or some vitamin e oil.

Following the method above, simply melt your oil and waxes just a few minutes together in the microwave or for  a longer period in a small crock pot (like 4 hours).   Swirl in additives to your warm preparation, and use pipettes to transfer to lip balm pots or tins to cool. Soy Wax and beeswax offer natural beautiful sheens and why we like both.  For lip balm butter simply replace the 2/3 oil with butter of choice, such as mango or shea.  To color you can tint with old lipstick slivers, we use toothpicks to swirl color in.

Basic Balm Stick Recipe

Following the methods above, you will simply want to heat up 3/4 food grade oil to 1/4 wax such as Candellia or beeswax.    You can exchange the food grade oil to soybean shortening in the same amounts if you like.  You can also purchase ready made balm base to skip these steps and get to the fun part, adding other ingredients!  When you are done mixing your warm oils and waxes, transfer the formula into balm stick tubes using plastic pipettes. Again you can tint your product with lip stick slivers by using tooth picks to swirl color in, or get cosmetic grade glitter in the low end cosmetic section of any store.
