Formulas Basic Lip Balm Recipe

A good basic lip balm formula is 90% food grade oil, (such as safflower right on the grocery store shelf) which is high in Vitamin e,  to 10% beeswax or 10% Candelilla wax.  Vegans do prefer Candelilla wax which is plant based and comes from a plant in Mexico.  In the summer months you want your lip balm formula wax hardener to go up 10% if the product will be exposed to heat, such as in a car.  This does mean you reduce your oil by 10% in exchange for more wax.  You can melt the materials in a small crock pot or in the microwave using an Anchor hocking measuring cup.  The best part about making your own lip balm is if you mess up you can melt them in the hot sun and start again.  Solid perfume is made the same way, just have the wax at 40% and your fragrance at 10%.  So, solid perfume would be 50% oil, 40% wax and 10% fragrance of choice.  When adding flavor, just a few drops per 1/2 ounce product, should be ample.  Flavor usually is under one percent.

To Make 10 Ounces of Lip Balm Base [makes 20 1/2 ounce pots or 40 Tubes]

8 ounces of food grade oil

2 Ounces of Beeswax or Candelilla Wax

1/4-1/2 ounce of flavor oil

Any Additives [optional]

When your oils and waxes are melted you can swirl in additives, such as vitamin e, flavor oil, or lip stick slivers for "tint,"  and then transfer to lip balm pots or tins to cool. For lip balm butter simply replace the 2/3 oil with butter of choice, such as mango or shea.  Make sure you heat to above 168 degrees so you do not get a grainy final product which is known as butter crystallization.

Following the methods above, you will want to use 70% food grade oil to 30% wax.  You have to really allow your product to cool thoroughly, before attempting to twist them (the fun part.)  This is because the inside, the core,  is the last to harden.  A touch of beeswax can come in handy, but is not necessary with our soy wax designed for use with lip balm making.  You can also purchase ready made balm base to skip these steps and get to the fun part, adding other ingredients!  When you are done mixing your warm oils and waxes, transfer the formula into chap stick tubes using our plastic pipettes.                                                                                  back to top
